Wrath of the Lichkin2009-03-10 00:00:00Welcome to the fourth edition of Wrath of the Lichkin, where an infamous Moonkin shall guide you through the various, sometimes confusing, changes that Blizzard will be making to World of Warcraft in the upcoming expansion. Last time we had a little trip to Hybrid town, but today we're entering a completely different phase.
Introduction
Lately there has been a whole lot of positive feedback on a new principle called 'phasing', and chances are you have been scratching your head about it. After all, even Onyxia had an air phase, so how can people call this principle new and refreshing
The phasing we're talking about in this article is something entirely different, however. Have you ever felt that your actions were making no actual impact on the world? You showed to the world what a dastardly dragon Katrana Prestor really is, but the next time you visit Stormwind, she's standing there again with a smug smirk on her face.
The reason for this is obvious, players who join the game later than you also need to be able to do this questline, so making a visible impact on the world wouldn't be an option. Or would it
What is Phasing
Let me first start off by giving a tiny explanation about how yo...
WRUP2009-03-10 00:00:00Oh dear. It seems one of our own, Mr. Alex Ziebart, is abandoning the our for a weekend in Warhammer Online.
Alex Ziebart: Do I lose my job if I say Warhammer?
Oh, don't worry, Alex. We don't fire people for playing other MMOs. Not often, anyway. But regardless of Alex's fate, for the rest of the team -- and to let us know what you're up to in-game this weekend (Warcraft or otherwise) -- keep reading!
Adam Holisky: Shaman to 77. Northrend leveling is going sooo fast!
Amanda Miller: Visiting my folks and cleaning my apartment. Oh, and kicking Malygos to the curb.
Chase Christian: My Holy Paladin will be attending her first 25-man Naxx, and also planning to hit 5-6 heroics a day on all my toons as I am not on-call this weekend.
Dan O'Halloran: Going to finally make it 80 on my Druid and make the decision on which of the three specs I've been enjoying in Wrath (cat, tree, bird) he is going to really focus on.
Daniel Whitcomb: I'm very close to Both Ebon Blade and Netherwing exalted on my Death Knight, so I'm hoping to finish off the grind for both of those achievements this weekend. I'm also looking at grabbing heroic runs for Oculus, Violet Hold, and Hall...
WRUP2009-03-10 00:00:00Oh, public test realms, so full of new and exciting content, we love you. No, really, we do! We hadn't realized it was possible to fall like this for testing hardware, but we think it's true love. Oh, no, it won't be like patch 3.0.8 again, where we hung out with you for a little while before running back to the live realms. You know the live realms don't mean anything to us, don't you? With your recent upgrade to patch 3.1, you have dual specs and Ulduar -- what's not to love about that? (And how's the occasional world server crash going to get in the way of the true love we feel for patch 3.1?) We promise, the live realms don't hold a candle to you. And didn't you like those flowers we sent you
Now could you please, perhaps, let us log on? Just for a little while
Oh, right, and if anyone wants to know what the WoW Insider team is up to -- just log on to the test realm. (Or if the world server is down, as it so often is, you can keep reading.)
Adam Holisky: Sons of Hodir gets to exalted this weekend on my Shaman.
Alex Ziebart: Leveling some random alt, whichever one will be able...
WRUP2009-03-10 00:00:00It'd be quicker to count the number of WoW Insider staffers who aren't working on Love Is in the Air achievements this weekend than to count those that are. (And if you're interested in becoming a Fool for Love, too, check out our guide to earning the Love is In the Air meta-achievement.) Though there are a couple of hold-outs doing something called "raiding" or "real life" this weekend, holiday-mania seems to hold sway. If you're interested in knowing what sort of trouble the WoW Insider team is getting into this weekend -- or want to tell us what sort of trouble you're getting into this weekend -- read on!
Adam Holisky: Love is in Air in casa del Holisky. /dnd.
Allison Robert: Probably some farming for Ulduar -- I'd like a nice stockpile sitting on an alt so that I'm covered for the days when farm time's not gonna happen. My guild was also kicking around the idea of revisiting Sunwell for fun.
Amanda Dean: I'm going to finish leveling my RAF hunter to 60 and hit up Naxx 10 with my guildies. I'll probably send out Valentines on Saturday, because I'm just like that.
Amanda Miller: I will also be working on the achievements, and hoping for the pet. We finished all of our raiding during the week, so I'l...
WRUP2009-03-10 00:00:00The Lunar Festival will be starting tomorrow and though the WoW Insider team is doing all of their usual leveling and raiding and PvPing and whatever else they do... but with the achievement system and its associated swanky titles (and the long-term promise of a Violet Proto-Drake), everyone's going to be interested in hunting down Elders. (Hunting, at least, in the friendliest possible way.)
And our resident Priest, Matticus? He's clearly fallen to the dark side.
Matt Low: Whipping out Jin Rock. Time to level the Ret Pally of Doom.
For the rest of the team -- and to chime in with what you're doing this weekend -- read on!
Adam Holisky: Getting my Shaman to 68 and heading to Northrend!
Alex Ziebart: My 10-man has its eyes set on 3 Drake Sartharion. 1 Drake and 2 Drakes only took a couple of hours each, but I suspect 3 Drakes will give us nightmares for weeks.
Allison Robert: I'll be doing more Icecrown quests, spending some time with friends, and knocking of...
WRUP2009-03-10 00:00:00Leveling, questing, PvPing, raiding, Lunar Festival achievements... that's what the WoW Insider team is doing this weekend: a little bit of everything. And if you aren't up to anything Saturday afternoon, you could join us for some fun with our guild, It Came from the Blog, on Zangarmarsh (US), Horde-side, to hang out, collect some festival coins, and chat. But some of us, apparently, have been skipping Wrathgate, a quest-chain which is without question one of the most impressive in the game. Why would anyone do that to themselves?
Michael Gray explains it for us: Fishing up Old Crafty, so I can complete my Warthgate quest series. I really want to finish levelling my Paladin, but Old Crafty mocks me. In my sleep. In nightmares. Like some drooling, fanged monster.
And apparently Michael isn't the only one. Daniel chimed in to say "I leveled from 1 to 270 fishing in Instance Ogrimmar before finally giving up and finishing Wrathgate. Then I came back later and got Crafty on the second cast. Old Ironjaw in Ironforge still eludes me though." But, sadly, not all of us thought up this strategy in advance. Matt Rossi joined in with, "Wait, you're not finishing Wrathgate so you can go to the Org that's phased f...
WRUP2009-03-10 00:00:00Another week is gone and another weekend has arrived -- which means the WoW Insider crew are hard at work with what we like to call "work-related research." (And which our loved ones call "goofing off and playing video games.") What's the team doing this weekend? Avoiding vampires, obviously.
Robin Torres: Our whole family has come down with the plague and I'm not sure how much time we'll have to play in between zombie explosions. I've also been bitten by the RP bug and am trying to find an RP/RPPvP realm to suit my needs (and without a vampire overpopulation).
Alex chimed in with a response: Robin, give up now. Such a server does not exist. The only difference is what kind of vampires you'll come across. Anne Rice? Twilight? Dracula? Hellsing? Nosferatu? That's what you need to consider. A vampireless RP server does not exist.
Though the WoW Insider team can't agree on their vampire of choice, we do all enjoy a good time in World of Warcraft. So what's the rest of the team up to this weekend?
Adam Holisky: Since my sources inside Blizzard tell me that they hate every class other than Shamans, I'm going to be playing mine on full...
WRUP2009-03-10 00:00:00No, no, no -- we haven't heard any rumors that microtransactions are coming to our own World of Warcraft, but when we discovered that some of our staff wasn't aware of this hot MMO topic, we had to start our own education campaign. So some of us seem to be hitting the books this weekend...
Adam Holisky: I'll be doing one word this weekend: microtransactions.
Alex Ziebart: Trying to get some Heroic groups going on my Protection Paladin, and if that fails I'll either be playing Warhammer or Left 4 Dead. If the PTR goes up tonight or sometime this weekend, everything else gets shelved for that. Also, giving Adam lessons on microtransactions.
Despite the desire for our bloggers to have a well-rounded knowledge of the gaming world, we are hoping that Adam finds something better to do. For the rest of the team -- and your own weekend play plans -- read on!
Allison Robert: We'll be working on 10-man Sarth 3D this weekend, in which I will sit absorbing Sarth's fire breaths and pretending that I am a voidwalker (I still think the whole voidwalker-tank concept on what's currently the hardest fight in the game is both incredibly ...
